Lens on Paws: Pet Photographer’s Journey in Minneapolis

I remember the first time I saw Daniel Coleman’s work. It was a series of photos that showed dogs taking baths, and it was so cute! But what surprised me most about Daniel’s work was that he didn’t have any formal training in photography or editing. In fact, he’d never taken a class or read anything on how to take better pictures. That inspired me: If someone who hadn’t been trained could take such beautiful pictures, then surely I could too! So I bought a camera and started shooting everything around my house—including my two dogs, who happen to be pretty cute themselves. And now here we are today: Daniel has opened his own studio and is doing really well as a professional pet photographer in Minneapolis with over 200k followers on Instagram (that’s more than Jessica Alba!). And we’re both very excited about this new career path we’ve chosen!

Meet Daniel

Daniel is a pet photographer in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He’s been photographing pets for over 10 years and has a degree in photography from the University of Minnesota. Daniel is also a member of the Minnesota Photographers Association and Professional Photographers of America (PPA).

What is your background?

Daniel is a photographer, marketer and pet photographer. He has a background in photography that spans nearly two decades. As the owner of Reel Pet Portraits, Daniel has been photographing pets since 2005 while also managing all aspects of marketing and advertising for his company.

How did you get started in photography?

I started doing photography as a hobby when I was in high school. I grew up in a small town and didn’t have many friends, so I would spend most of my time taking pictures of nature and landscapes. That’s how my love for photography began!

My first camera was an old Kodak point-and-shoot that had no manual controls or zoom lens; it came with just one aperture setting (f/8) and two shutter speeds (1/125th sec., 1/250th sec.). The only thing you could do with this camera was point it at what you wanted to take a picture of, press down on the shutter button until it clicked once, then adjust your composition before pressing down again until another click occurred–but only if you didn’t move any part of yourself in between presses! If any part moved at all during this process then there would be blurring from motion blur caused by hand movement during exposure time (1/125th sec). This meant more work needed doing post-processing later because there wasn’t much control over depth-of-field either since everything would come out equally focused regardless of whether it was close or far away from where we were standing when pressing down onto our subject matter.”

Why did you choose to focus on pet photography?

I chose pet photography because there is such a demand for it. The variety of different pets you can photograph is endless, and the variety of locations you can shoot in is also limitless. You’ll meet so many people and hear their amazing stories about their pets!

What are the most common questions you get about pet photography?

Pet Photographer Minneapolis is a broad category. You can hire a professional to take photos of your pet alone, or with the family, or even with other animals. Many people want to capture the personalities of their pets and share them with friends and family members.

The best way to find a good photographer is by asking around at local businesses in your area that cater to pets–such as groomers, animal hospitals, and pet stores–or by searching online reviews on Yelp! or Google+. The more experience they have photographing animals in general (not just dogs), the better quality work they’ll be able to produce for you!

The cost of hiring a professional varies depending on how many images are needed; however it usually averages around $300-$600 per session if there’s only one person involved (not including travel). If there are multiple people involved then costs may increase depending on factors such as travel distance from Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport (MSP) or St Paul Downtown Station Light Rail Station

Do you have any advice for anyone considering a career in pet photography?

If you’re interested in pursuing a career in pet photography, I would recommend finding a mentor who can teach you the basics. It’s also important to have a camera that’s easy to use and understand. You will want to learn about the different types of lenses and how they affect your photos, as well as understanding light and how it affects your images. The best way for me to learn was through practice; I took thousands upon thousands of photos until my work started improving!

There has never been a better time to jump into the world of pet photography!

As a pet photographer, you can help animals in so many ways. You have the power to make them feel safe and loved. Your client’s pets will love being photographed by you because they know that you’re going to make them look great!

When I first started out as a photographer, I didn’t know what kind of style I wanted my business to have or even if I should start one at all. The best advice that anyone ever gave me was “just do it.” If there’s something that makes your heart skip a beat or gives life meaning–do it!

Conclusion

If you’re interested in pursuing a career in pet photography, I would recommend starting out by taking some classes. There are many different ways to learn how to take good photos and Photoshop is great for editing images. You should also find a community of other photographers who can help support each other as well!
