Concept of Power Transmission

The system of power transmission system is a process or method of transferring energy from one source to another source in a system or machine. The role and purpose of power transmission is transmitting the linear or rotary motion, forcing and loading for performing the required functions. This is mainly done by transforming mechanically input energy to output energy.

Types of Power Transmission Systems

  1. Electrical Power Transmission

Electrical Power Transmissions are considered to be one of the most versatile and widely used for the process of transmitting power or energy through cables or wires. They are mainly known for their ease in controlling, adaptability and efficiency.

Key components associated with the systems of Electrical Power Transmission

Generators

Generators are used for transforming mechanical into electrical energy which provides required electricity sources.

Transformers

It is used for changing the electricity’s voltage levels for efficient electrical transmission as well as its distribution.

Electric Cables and Wires

These conductors are utilized for the transmission of electrical power from the source point to the load point with the help of connection of different electrical systems and devices.

Applications of the systems of Electrical Power Transmission

In the present scenario of modernization, Electrical Power Transmission is being used widely and in the following areas.

  • Electrical power grids for the purpose of distribution of power to businesses and residents
  • Electric motors in the industry machinery, transportation and different types of appliances.
  • Systems of generating renewable energy like wind turbines, solar panels, etc.
  • Systems used for heating and lighting
  1. Mechanical Power Transmission

Mechanical Power Transmission System has been used since early days and is the most used method. It includes the process of transmitting energy from one source to another with the help of mechanical elements such as gears, chains, shafts, belts and pulleys. This type of power transmission is mostly used for its precision, efficiency and reliability.

Key components associated with mechanical power transmission

Gears

Gears or Gear Drives are toothed wheels that meshes together for transmitting rotational power and movement. They are mostly used in industrial machines, automobiles and other household appliances. Gears have a compact structure and are most appropriate for short distance power transmission. They have the capability of transmitting motion and forcing between parallel, intersecting and staggered axes at different angles.

Belt and Pulley

Belt or belt drive is a system of mechanical transmission that utilizes flexible belts that are wrapped with two different sized pulleys for the transmission of power. This system is mostly used in HVAC processes and conveyor belts.

Chain and Sprockets

The utilization of chain and sprockets are  quite similar to the system of belts and pulleys but are mostly used in the applications requiring more durability and strength such as in bicycles and motorcycles.

Applications or Implementation of the system of mechanical power transmission

The following are the different areas in which the system of mechanical power transmission are mostly used.

  • Household Appliances
  • Production and manufacturing Machinery
  • Mining Machinery
  • Agricultural and construction equipment
  1. Hydraulic Power Transmission

Hydraulic Power Transmission relied on the utilization of pressurized liquids or fluids like oil for transmitting power. This kind of power transmission system is responsible for providing excellent precision, control as well as ability of multiplying force which makes them appropriate for heavy duty implementation or applications.

Key Components associated with Hydraulic Power Transmission

Hydraulic Actuators

Hydraulic Actuators are used for converting hydraulic pressure to mechanical work.

Hydraulic Pumps

The hydraulic pump is used for pressurizing hydraulic fluids that are required to create fluids of high-pressure.

Valves

Valves are implemented for controlling the hydraulic liquids flow. It plays a vital role to regulate the pressure of the fluids and direct them to different components.

Applications of the system of Hydraulic Power Transmission

Hydraulic power transmission systems are being widely used in the following processes.

  • Construction equipment like bulldozers, excavators, etc.
  • Aerospace like systems of landing gears
  • Automation such as power streaming
  • Manufacturing machinery like molding machines, injection machines and presses
  • Agricultural Equipment like Harvesting equipment and tractors
  1. Pneumatic Power Transmission

This power transmission system uses compressed air for the purpose of transmitting energy or power. It is mostly used in areas where using electricity can create hazards or where precised controlling is not required.

Key Components associated with the systems of Pneumatic Power Transmission

Air Compressor

Air Compressor is used for pressurizing the air to create a compressed air source.

Pneumatic Actuators

The pneumatic actuators are used for the conversion of energy of compressed air to mechanical work. Some of the common examples of these devices are pneumatic motors and pneumatic cylinders.

Applications of systems of pneumatic power transmission

  • Automation and manufacturing like robotics and assembly lines
  • Construction and mining like pneumatic hammers and drills
  • Transportation such as brake systems of heavy vehicles
  • Production of food and beverages like machinery of processing and packaging
  • Healthcare industry like medical and ventilation devices
