PART I: Pandemic: The Key to Fighting Fear

It is difficult to reverse the effects of depression, anxiety, fear, and panic once they have taken up residence within us, and it is even more difficult to regain a peaceful and calm perspective once they have done so. These powerful feelings have the potential to be exceedingly uncomfortable, disruptive, and harmful to one’s peace of mind, and they are self-perpetuating. If you do nothing to combat it, fear, in particular, can have a wide range of negative effects on your mental health, as well as your physical health and your spiritual health. But, there is some good news to come out of all of this. Fear, hopelessness, and panic are all conditions that can be alleviated by practicing positive thought patterns, praying, and expressing gratitude to God.

As a registered nurse who has since retired, I am well aware of the fact that exposure to prolonged and intense stress for extended periods of time can, and frequently does, negatively impact one’s physical as well as mental health. Stress that is pervasive and ongoing, such as pandemic stress, has the potential to have a negative effect not only on an individual’s mental health but also on virtually every organ and every system in their body. It can cause, provoke, or exacerbate a whole host of serious medical issues, such as: cardiac symptoms such as angina chest pain, or heart attacks; autoimmune exacerbations of lupus, psoriatic arthritis, and multiple sclerosis (MS); gastro-intestinal symptoms, ulcers, debilitating migraines… and the list goes on and on…

During this pandemic in particular, we need to do everything in our power to relieve unnecessary stress and support and maintain the positive mind-body-spirit well-being that we have worked so hard to achieve. Anxiety and fear are contagious emotions. We must do everything in our power to rise above our pessimism, our fears, and the circumstances in which we find ourselves in spite of the pandemic that we are currently living in. In order to deal with this situation, we need to utilize all of our resources. Prayer is one of these life-giving resources that we have access to.

Even though we are experiencing uncertainty, social isolation, and upheaval at the moment, we still need to be diligent and make a concerted effort to keep some semblance of “normalcy” in our lives. If nothing else, discovering and putting into practice new methods of coping could very well serve to boost one’s immune system and provide relief for those who are feeling overwhelmed. These methods of coping, particularly prayer, may assist us in putting an end to our worrying about things over which we have no control, thereby allowing us to obtain a new perspective on our predicament and preventing the negative effects of ongoing stress.

At this unexpected, uncertain, and, for some people, tragic moment, it can be helpful for people of faith to remember that God is aware of everything that we are going through due to the pandemic. God knows exactly what we are going through. It is possible that we will be able to reclaim our tranquility and calm if we are able to just turn to God despite everything and keep in mind that His love for us is great and unfathomable. He is not some remote form of deity. Instead, He is a God who saves, loves, and has compassion for all people, and He is always present right here with us.

Who or what Is the Source of Your Help?

Where does your assistance come from, then? Some people say that their faith is what keeps them hopeful, and I agree with them. It is essential to pay attention to all three aspects of one’s health when considering the mind-body-spirit connection. During this pandemic, people of faith need to pray every day for protection, guidance, healing, and peace—not only for themselves and their loved ones, but also for the rest of the world. If you pray to God and put your faith in him, he will give you the strength you need to get through this difficult time. For those times when everything seems to be spinning out of control, and we are worn down, overburdened, and confused. God is present, and He maintains authority over the situation. It is necessary for us to extend an invitation to Him to enter our lives, praying earnestly and with a great deal of anticipation as we put our faith and reliance in God. Then, we will be able to move forward without fear, secure in the knowledge that God is working everything out for the common good in His own time and according to His own plan, regardless of how long it takes or how He chooses to do it.

“Those who love God and are called according to the purpose that He has for them, all things work out for their good.”

Romans 8:28

It is extremely challenging, if not impossible, for us to reach out to those around us, encourage them, or comfort ourselves when we are experiencing intense emotions such as fear, despondency, or panic. It’s possible that today is the day you should make the decision to cast away all negativity, welcome God into your life, and pray to Him for assistance. Even if it’s the first time you’ve done it, praying to God for assistance can have a profound impact on your life and could be the choice that ultimately gives you the most life. Despite the fact that our individual histories and worldviews are distinct, we are all weathering this tumultuous period — or, if you prefer, this storm — together. As we work to endure the pandemic and the many other challenges we face, we need to make it a daily practice to overcome our fears and pray for peace, both for ourselves and for those we care about. Only then can we hope to achieve the kind of comprehensive healing that is necessary for true recovery.

Fighting fear requires a lot of mental toughness and physical bravery, but we have to keep in mind that this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that won’t come around again. The development of a vaccine indicates that this pandemic will, at some point, come to an end. It will be endured by the people of this country as well as the people of this world, and eventually, it is likely that they will emerge stronger, more caring, and more empathetic. It is also possible that there will be a large outpouring of people who will grow in their faith and seek God with greater fervor than ever before. This is something that is highly likely.

When we pray and make the conscious decision to set aside all of our anxiety, despair, fear, and panic—and make no mistake, this is a choice—we are able to bask in the peace and rest in the quiet that only God can give. By acting in this manner, we give ourselves the opportunity to observe and bear witness to the process by which these draining negative emotions are gradually replaced with a fresh, everlasting, and contagious hope in God. We are able to move forward unburdened and renewed because we put our faith in the sanctified love, care, and abundant supply of God. Because it is written in the holy Bible:

“You shouldn’t be concerned about anything; rather, you should pray about everything. Tell God what you’re going through and thank him for everything he’s done for you. Then you will be able to feel the peace of God, which is beyond everything that we are able to comprehend. As you continue to live in Christ Jesus, His peace will keep watch over your hearts and minds.”

Philippians 4:6-7
