Marshall was born Thurgood Alonzo Marshall on September 29, 1908 in Baltimore. He was born into a poor family. His father was a sharecropper who worked on a tobacco plantation, while his mother was a housewife. Marshall was the third of four children. He received his early education from the Baltimore City public school system. He started his college career at Howard University.

After graduating from high school, Marshall enrolled at Howard University and earned his Bachelor’s Degree in 1930. He then went on to earn his Law degree Black lawyers from Yale Law School in 1935. At Howard, he participated in the YMCA and the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA). He was a member of the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity. He met his wife, Ethel Toney, at a dance in Maryland.

He began practicing law at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Marshall and his colleagues went on to file several cases against the government in favor of the advancement of black people’s civil rights. One of the most important cases in which Marshall participated was a case against racial segregation in schools. At the time, the Supreme Court’s decision in Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) ruled that racial segregation in public transport was legal.
